School Support: Playtherapist

Kez Black, Playtherapist, is working in school one day a week. Her aim within the school is to help support the holistic well-being of pupils through individual play therapy sessions.

About Play Therapy

Play is a child’s natural medium for communication, expression and learning. Play therapy has therefore been shown to effectively meet each child where they’re at by giving them the nonjudgemental time, space, and appropriate boundaries to help them develop the insight, skills and resilience they need to build self-esteem, overcome trials and challenges they’re facing and move from surviving to thriving.

Qualifications

Kez holds a BSc, Majoring in Psychology and Human Physiology and a BSocSci postgraduate degree in Psychology, a PGCERT in Play Therapy and is currently completing her PGDIP in Play Therapy

Experience

Kez has over 10 years of experience working with children aged from 4 months to 18 years, across a range of emotional, social, neurological and physical needs.

Can it help my child?

Play therapy’s dynamic and integrative holistic model ensures that the therapy is adapted to the child’s needs, not vice versa. The list below shows some of the areas where play therapy can help, though this is by no means exhaustive.

  • Low Self-Esteem
  • Hyperactivity
  • ADHD
  • Autism
  • Changes in the family
  • Bereavement
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Trauma
  • Processing medical needs
  • Behavioural needs
  • Sensory needs

Evidence for effectiveness

PTUK’s clinical evidence base, containing over 12,000 cases, shows that between 77% and 84% of children show a positive change using play therapy. See about Play Therapy
