Black History Month

In the UK, October marks the beginning of Black History Month. This national celebration aims to promote and celebrate the contributions of those with African and Caribbean heritage to British society and to foster an understanding of Black history in general.

Black History Month 2025

 

The theme for Black History Month (BHM) 2025 is 'Standing Firm in Power and Pride' which is a wonderful opportunity for schools and settings to highlight the benefits of diversity and show how we as a school celebrate diversity in all its forms.

October 2023- Year 2- Amazing Black People

  • KS1 History: Black British History Children's television presenter Nigel Clarke celebrates the lives of six extraordinary people and their contribution to British history.
  • KS2 History: Black British Stories A collection of short films for primary schools, exploring the experiences and contributions of people from communities across the UK, and celebrating the rich contribution of the black community to the culture, society and economy of the UK.
  • Katherine Johnson A mathematician who joined NASA's space program in the 1950s and played a crucial role in calculating the trajectories for their space missions.
  • Wangari Mathai Her courage and dedication was recognised in 2004, when she won a Nobel Peace Prize.
  • Florence Price In 1933 she overcame prejudice to become the first black female composer to have her work performed by a major orchestra.
  • Joseph Bologne An extraordinary story of a composer who took Paris by storm.
  • Walter Tull KS1 One of Britains first black professional footballers.
  • Time to level up KS1/KS2 A short film for children about self-belief, identity and positive relationships, featuring Black role models.
  • Mary Seacole KS2 Journey to the Crimea. The Crimean War. After the War was over.
  • Magid Magid KS2 Becoming the youngest ever Lord Mayor of Sheffield
