In Year 1 children are expected to read at least 5 times a week. They are given Read Write Inc "Floppy copies" of books they have worked on in school. These have to be read at least 3 times at home or until your child is fluent on them. They also need to practice the red and green word grids in them (as these build up a bank of words that they should recognise instantly in subsequent books). In addition, the children are given a Read Write Inc "Book Bag Book" which will be new to them but will repeat themes and therefore words from the floppy copy. They also have access to a library of books including Non-fiction and Poetry books that they can change on a Thursday.
