Definitions

What is Diversity? It is a combination of our differences that shape our view of the world, our perspective, and our approach. Diversity is also about recognising, respecting, and valuing differences based on ethnicity, gender, age, race, religion, disability, and sexual orientation.

 

What is Equality? Equality is about ensuring that every individual has an equal opportunity to make the most of their life and talents. It is also the belief that no one should have poorer life chances because of the way they were born, where they come from, what they believe, or whether they have a disability.

 

LGBTQ+ Is an initialism that stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning. In use since the 1990s, the initialism, as well as some of its common variants, functions as an umbrella term for sexuality and gender identity.

 

What is Culture? Cultures are groups of people who share a common set of values and beliefs. They may also share cultural elements like languages, festivals, rituals and ceremonies, pastimes, food, and architecture. Examples of cultures include western culture, youth culture, counterculture, and high culture.

 

What is Religion?  Personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices. The service and worship of God or the supernatural. Commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance.

 

What is Disability? A physical or mental impairment, and, impairment has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on the person's ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.

 

What are Special Needs? Any of various difficulties (such as a physical, emotional, behavioural, or learning disability or impairment) that causes an individual to require additional or specialized services, support, or accommodations (such as in education or recreation).

 

What is a Migrant? Someone who voluntarily chooses to move to other places in search of work or better living conditions.

 

What is an Immigrant? Someone who voluntarily chooses to move to foreign countries permanently in search of work or better living conditions.

 

What is a Refugee? Someone who has been forced from their home to escape war or conflict, persecution,  natural disaster, or other circumstances that have disrupted public order and as a result, they require international protection and seek asylum. Often referred to as asylum seekers.

 

What is Gender Stereotype? An often unfair and untrue belief that many people may have about the characteristics attributed to a female or male based on their gender. 

 

What is Neurodivergent? The term “neurodivergent” describes people whose brain differences affect how their brain works. That means they have different strengths and challenges from people whose brains don't have those differences. The possible differences include medical disorders, learning disabilities, and other conditions.
