Chinese New Year

Our RE Topic in Spring Term 1 was related to the question "Is it important to celebrate New Year?"

We discuss how New Year is celebrated in the United Kingdom and how we celebrate it in our own families. We looked at how New Year is celebrate in other religions and cultures including Judaism and in China.

We were very lucky when Martin's Mum kindly offered to come and talk to us in more detail about Chinese New Year where we learnt about the symbols of different New Years - this year is the Year of the Monkey. We learnt that the colour red is considered to be very lucky and we learnt some Chinese too. How to say hello and goodbye and to count to 3. Martin's Mum had even taken the time to write every child's name in Chinese writing.

It was a lovely afternoon and the children learnt a lot about Chinese New Year so we are very grateful to Martin's Mum for giving up her time to talk to us.
